from another thread:
'So you believe that advocating that (sic) using profanity is acceptable?'
Not too long after my husband stopped his meeting attendence, I was surprised to hear him using profanity now & then.
It bothered me.
But then I began thinking it through. Like so many other 'do's & don'ts' within the fellowship, we were taught that profanity was wrong. (As an aside, I recognize that profanity is extremely abusive & rude when directed at a person. But when using an expletive out of frustration, I just don't see the big deal.
Is there a biblical admonishment for using profanity?
We use such words as 'shoot' instead of 'sh*t', or 'darn-it' instead of 'dam**t' so really, we haven't gotten to the root of the problem (if it actually is a problem). We've just forced the profanity underground.

^^^^^In the above post, Liz states:^^^^^
Like so many other 'do's & don'ts' within the fellowship, we were taught that profanity was wrong.
This has nothing to do with "the fellowship", profanity is frowned on by society in general.
Those who have no conscience about using such words are considered "rude and crude" individuals.
Saying such words would land me in the school's principal office, "It wasn't no 2X2 school either".

Hi Liz, You stated: "Like so many other 'do's & don'ts' within the fellowship, we were taught that profanity was wrong." Yes, and we can be thankful for that. That's a good thing. Within the general context of good society- profanity is considered "wrong." The FCC fines television companies heavily for even allowing a word like "sh*t" to slip into a live interview. NASCAR fined one of it's top drivers $10,000 for saying a cuss word during an interview. They also deducted racing points away from him which knocked him out of being ranked the top driver. Article at: www.nascar.com/2004/news/headlines/cup/10/05/dearnhardtjr_points/It is an interesting subject. I have wondered what exactly makes one word "good" and another "bad". I imagine a $10,000 fine helps clear up the ambiguity. Sincerely, towit

Writing only for myself, my humanity frequently wants to express itself with some sort of euphemistic expletive as Liz relates. When Paul Abenroth was my companion, I had a habit of saying "rats" when something ran amiss.
Paul pointed out to me that I believed in cussing, as it was just a substitutive word for something I wouldn't ever consider uttering. From that point onward, I just discovered many people had such habits. Some are more hypocritical about it than others, hence societies do determine what is acceptable public usage and what is not but usually by what is acceptable verbiage proceeding from the mouths of children. I see nothing wrong with this, as long as those who practice it do not pretend they are better than those who don't.
The prostitutes and tax collectors, and sinners of Jesus' day appeared to have repented of their ways which likely were consumed by such habits, while higher society is reflected as remaining self righteous. My own decision has been to eliminate the habit as best I can, not wanting the last word on my lips to be a curse word should I face death from an uncontrollable situation.
However, I remain friends of all, those who curse and those who don't. Neither are "better people" than the other as a result of having such a habit, or not. Once I believed I would be defined by others by my friends in life. I do not any longer and I'm sorry for ever having such beliefs.
As I expressed in the beginning of this post, I've written this to explain my own beliefs which are a combination of Liz's and towit's. So often I perceive the church body of Christ to have many members, all of which are required to keep that body in balance.
Warm regards,
Dennis

I'm Liz - didn't log-in first.....
I erronously omitted a sentence from my original post:
'Like so many other 'do's and don'ts within the fellowship, we were taught that profanity was wrong'.
I thought I had included this disclaimer.... I recognize that using profanity is also considered 'wrong' in other venues.
Thanks for the replies!
I take issue with InnocentQ's statement that those who use profanity have no conscience. I have a couple of acquaintenances who swear like a sailor yet are kind and trustworthy and would give you the shirt off their back.
I'd rather keep company with one who utters profanity than one who gossips....

I take issue with InnocentQ's statement that those who use profanity have no conscience. Dear Liz, Please reread my posting. I will highlight the part that you took offense to. Here goes: Those who have no conscience about using such words are considered "rude and crude" individuals.I am talking about profanity, nothing else about those that use such language. I will turn my other cheek to the slam that was meant to hurt, and I forgive you.

Lighten up, buddy! Who said I was offended? (Offend - something that outrages the moral or physical senses.) I said I take issue with your comment - if you consider that a slam, meant to hurt, I suggest you develop a thicker hide!
I still don't get your point...... but no worries!

If we were all to start using profanities & obscenities....offensive & objectionable words & phrases, would lose their punch. Nobody would get offended by any kind of language anymore. I think we should just all cut loose & cuss to our heart's content. Why don't we have a cuss-in. &&^)*(()_*^%$^ (let's see if you can do better than that)?

Although raised (but never professing) in a professing home, and married to a professing wife...I have always been a cusser. There is nothing better for relieving tension(in my experience) than by turning the air blue with horrible oathes & obscenities. Even my ex-professing, ex-wife, could cut loose with some pretty salty language.

One thing that disturbs me about this board is how some seem to be able to dismiss just about anything as "not important".
James3:10 "Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.[/u
May we all be very careful of what we promote or suggest as being "not a big deal" for in so doing we may be setting a snare to others.
Love, HFA

Does it matter what we say?
James 1:26 (NIVr) Suppose you think your beliefs are right because of how you live. But you don't control what you say. Then you are fooling yourselves. Your beliefs are not worth anything at all.

The bible makes it very clear that what we do and say MATTERS.
Take time to read the following verses:
Eph 5: 2-4 tells us to walk in love and put away our filthiness and foolish talking but rather give thanks.
One thing I like to remind myself of: We are not to take the Lord's name in vain. So, I make it a habit not to take ANYONE'S name in vain. (I'm not perfect, so obviously I slip up now and then.)
Col 4:6 commands our words to "always be gracious". I'm sorry, but curse words are not gracious, no matter the context.
And, don't forget, a kind word turneth away wrath. But, I understand we're talking more about the "ouch, I hurt myself," or "Oh, I shouldn't have done that" sort of profanity.
Remember the old saying that was plastered EVERYWHERE (at least in the states) a few years back?
WWJD: What would Jesus do?
Honestly, I severely doubt he would have let such an utter come from his mouth as I have from mine.
I use to say something like, "Oh fudge," or "Motherfludpucker" (Don't ask where I picked these up) when I stubbed my toe or burned my hand. Let me tell you one thing- children pick these things up, and "Oh, Fudge" and "Oh my gosh" don't sound so great coming from a two-year old.
I find it's much better to just let out a yelp, or even walk outside and scream... but there are still sometimes I slip and say, "Dagnabit!" instead.
