Howitis, you firies are sure doing it tough, when will it end. More extreme weather expected on Saturday. You keep safe, we love you, and need you, and indeed all firies. We feel for Five firefighters who were injured today, with three taken to hospital suffering serious burn injuries after their crew was "enveloped by fire" near the Bargo area, south west of Sydney. Do hope they have a good recovery. Bargo is getting down your way isn't it. Since the start of the season the ongoing bushfires have destroyed 684 homes as well as 48 facilities and more than 2000 outbuildings in New South Wales. Almost 250 homes have been damaged. Thanks @redback, yes its ongoing and relentless today was terrible, and I'm really not looking forward to Saturday. It's a bad one that one south west of Sydney....lots of homes in the firing line Hang in there howitis! You are doing a great job!

Very sad tragic news this morning. A tanker truck hit a falling tree and overturned. 2 Firies killed, and others injured. They were volunteers doing it trying to keep others safe. They are indeed heroes for putting their lives on the line.
Our thoughts are with their Families as they grieve, so close to Christmas.

Both fathers to young children....so sad, may there be help for the families, friends and colleagues to cope with their grief.... So thankful for today which is a little easier weather wise, not looking forward to tomorrow.

Tragic, and I agree, thoughts are with their families as they grieve, especially so close to Christmas....I hear ScoMo is returning from Hawaii because of this.
I hope the Government looks after the families

Yes Pragmatic, ScoMo is coming back to Australia where he belongs. I do think somebody like Jacinda Arden is better in these tragic situations. Women show much more emotion, empathy and compassion. Men tend to be too steely, and it is politics all the time. And of corse Schmo's mob want the money kept in the bank, they have been very slow in helping the Farmers who are desperate. That has been left mostly to the charity sector. I suppose we can be thankful that Australians are generous, and help their mates when they are doing it tough.

Thanks Pragmatic . It is a tough time for many Aussies at the moment, with fires and a severe drought. But that "True Blue" spirit is alive and well, and will help to get them through it. Think it stems from our Convict beginnings. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. And of course the ANZAC spirit is strong and will stand the test of time. We will let you win the Rugby, and we will win the Cricket.

why is the australian PM taking a vacation while the fires are raging? curious.... Probably because its the main holiday time of the year for us. Our children get 6 weeks holiday from school many businesses close or wind down to a skeleton staff between Christmas and New Year and some may take the rest of the week off or more, especially in years like this year when Christmas and New year falls mid week. As a fire fighter I don't resent him taking his holidays, I do think though holidaying outside Australia wasn't a particularly good idea and the posting of the 'happy family' snaps taken on a foreign beach, probably didn't do much to boost the morale of the citizens of Australia when many are in such dire straits with the fires and drought.

If there is a public donation fund to help the relatives of those lost firies, etc., can someone provide a link here. Having been part of the emergency services for most of my working life, I feel a strong affiliation to those in other countries, especially the once removed Brits!

I am reduced to tears when anyone who serves their community and/or county is injured or lost. They are doing a job I couldn't do. A job I don't want to do. I am very grateful to them.

Thank God for Firies, they are the salt of the Earth. The situation is still catastrophic. They will be still fighting on Christmas Day, away from their loved ones. Let us remember they are volunteers, unpaid. They won't be taking holidays, and the Farmers devastated by the drought won't be having one either.

For those interested, from today's news:
About 100 homes have been lost in bushfires across New South Wales since Friday, the state's Rural Fire Service says.
At least 20 structures are believed to have been destroyed in the small village of Balmoral in the Southern Highlands, a location devastated by the Green Wattle Creek fire.
The RFS said at least 829 NSW homes had been lost so far this bushfire season.

Many thanks howitis for all your hard, front-line work and to all the other firies for the same. Very tough job in very tough conditions - admire the spirit of volunteerism. Best wishes to you and your family for a blessed Christmas and hopefully some rain/cooler weather comes as well!
