I just finished reading a book by Misty Griffin called 'Tears of the Silenced'. It's about CSA in the Amish community but it is directed at trying to bring better awareness to police forces and child protection agencies to not just ignore the pleas of those that come forward just because they see these small secretive religious groups as harmless. Anyone that is interested in reading an inspiring story about a young girl that finally got free of seclusion and then free of the Amish community after an horrific life of abuse and sexual abuse by her stepfather and mother and then the Bishop of an Amish colony should read this book. It's available on Amazon as an E book. She tried to get government officials and police to help her and they always said it was her word against the word of her parents and the Amish elders and they could do nothing. They would come talk to the parents or the elders and they would say she was just a rebellious child that wanted to get the ones accused in trouble. She finally got out and is trying to help others in these different groups get free and have the CSA abusers arrested and jailed. The Amish do a 6 week Bann on any man that has been reported to the elders for molesting children in the community. All it means though is that he has to sit at a different table when he eats, it doesn't remove him from the home, and gives him continued access to the children he is molesting all through it. Once the 6 weeks is over, he is forgiven and if anyone talks about it again, they are condemned for not forgiving the man after he repented.
