In her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.
The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help.
Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your adoring fan.
James M. Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus, Dept. Of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education University of Virginia (It would be a damn shame if we couldn't own a Canadian)

LOL a very good example of just how the OT if followed as commanded would be completely illegal in our modern day. Yet people still believe the bible is the word of a god that never changes and should be followed to the letter. What kind of a god would ever condone what's written in the OT? Not one I would want to believe in. In fact that's exactly why I quit professing at 12. I couldn't worship a god that condoned the killing of men women and children that weren't virgins. How anyone can baffles me.

nothing like a smarta$$ to get the day rolling.... Especially , so when it on the Lords day (Sunday) and one should be even more concerned about such ideas and one should spend much of their day contemplating them with sincerity and honestly. Also thanks be to the smartass who is so concerned about our salvation that they willingly spend their own precious time and energy to remind us. Praised be to them and their own sacrifice!

Can you give us the results so we do not have to go over them all again and instead do something more up lifting with our our day?

nothing like a smarta$$ to get the day rolling.... I hadn't expected to be called a "smarta$$" wally. I thought it was a well written piece of humor. Many people question things written in the OT. I mingle with non-believers on a daily basis, and I've had questions like that asked of me. I've found that humor at times can be a healthy way to look at things. Hopefully others on this board appreciate the irony of this article.

I have to humble myself and believe in a lot of impossible stuff if I really want any understanding!
But you see I tried that path but when I finally realized that it simply wasn't worth believing it if I had to continue to perjurer my own self to myself by trying to believe something that wasn't & couldn't be true!
To deceive yourself is the cruelest cut there is to harm yourself.

Not after I realized it was my own fault if I kept trying to believe something that had just been ingrained in my mind by my upbringing because of the place & time where I was born.
Born at a different time in a different place, I would have been indoctrinated with a totally different system of beliefs and ideas. I am just glad that luckily I was born in a time & place where I was free to ditch a lot unrealistic and totally unnecessary stuff that is not relevant to the times & place where we are today.

Just FYI bluejay, I shared your article with local pastor today and his text response was “This is very interesting. Pertinent to a few discussions. Thanks”. Thank you Alvin And that was why I posted the article here. Thank you Alvin. We have a mix of believers (including myself) and non-believers who read this board. I attended an Alpha course years ago, and a gentleman at my table brought up this topic. What I appreciated was the fact that he was being honest in his doubt, and it was a valid question for us to deal with at that time. 1 Peter 3:15 What's written in the Bible is not always easy to understand. The existence of this LONG running board is proof of that. As I've already said, humor can be a great bridge between opposing points of view. Interesting that a local pastor "got it", and wally & speak took offense.

But they would be their 'virgins'....

The existence of this LONG running board is proof of that. As I've already said, humor can be a great bridge between opposing points of view. Interesting that a local pastor "got it", and wally & speak took offense. I think that those that are secure in their beliefs and faith find it easier to laugh at themselves and see value in questions. It's a sign of confidence and an open mind imo. The OT has a lot of stuff that people either try to forget is there or say is no longer relevant. There is a lot of justification going on because the OT God is not a nice guy. In fact he is a jealous vengeful being that is quite murderous when disobeyed. Not the God of love and mercy a lot of Christians like to say their God is. It was the story of the Amelekites that I read when I was about 12 that made me quit professing. I couldn't worship a being like the OT God. I just couldn't. Since then I have come to understand that he is just the creation of the Hebrew people who were trying to survive in an environment that was quite difficult for them. They were just small tribes surrounded by a lot of very powerful nations and they spent more time in captivity than they did as a nation. That's why I have always thought that giving Israel to the Jews was a rather crazy move since they never actually had a right to that land in the first place. I know those who believe in the bible will try and argue that, but the bible is not a good history book. It is a book (the OT anyway) that describes the struggles of a small group of people that had to try and maintain sovereignty in an area that had a lot of powerful neighbors. Not easy.
