Once again a week end DAR widower. My Regent DAR wife is attending another DAR convention in a rather distant part of the state. Rather hate being alone, but that is just part of life, huh? I really do feel for any of you being caught having to live alone in this life. Glad to have the little dogs! Good thing i’m not Muslim, eh?

Glad it's only for a week Dennis! It does get awful quiet alone doesn't it. Glad you have your furry companions to keep you company. They are so good at that!

Hmmm. Hunting from a helo considered great sport in New Zealand? My use & experience with any variable wing has ALWAYS been in the saving of life, not with killing anything.
Hunting from a moving vehicle of any sort is now considered highly illegal in Washington State, USA.
In ignorant youth, once considered a “good shot,” I did also once kill a coyote in a wheat field from a car, many, many years ago though!

Hi Dennis, deer are often in plague proportions here. All deer species are imports and they have devastated the native bush and fell fields here. For many years the govt employed ground hunters to cull them in an attempt to keep the numbers under control. Then some bright spark found a market for venison in Germany. The industry took off, firstly with ground hunters supplying fixed wings off rough air strips. Soon they realized helicopters would be the way to go. The first few pilots employed were a mixture of locals and ex Vietnam pilots. They did not last long as they thought the flying was crazy. There were even a few self taught pilots. Numerous deaths occurred. Some pilots hunted at night on riverbeds, using a spotlight. That caused more deaths due to collisions with trees and terra firma. The hunting is not for sport but for gathering of meat to sell. Without the venison industry, the vegetation on the mountains and forests would be dire straits. Many of the pilots went onto become highly skilled and involved in the more mundane agriculture industry flying and also the rescue industry. The most popular machine here for rescue work such as medical events and car crashes is BK 117 due to its cavernous interior accessed from the back via a ramp. For mountain rescue tho you cant beat a Squirrell or a 500. Hunting from vehicles on public land is also illegal here. Rightly so.

/www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcI1BRnQ9ho&t=55s Some really daft stuff here that was considered the norm back in the bad old days. Thank you, m’friend; That both explains and makes good sense. Smile, say, could we figure out a way to import some of that venison for a US market? Used to always have venison on our table, but cannot any longer, too stove in to hunt/gather my own, and no way to buy it. Would love to have some as I miss the wild meats I used to harvest. Can’t even find a source of chevron here in Washington.
Once I would buy a number of barren yearling shearling ewes for a song, slaughter and butcher them myself and give to my friends in need, as well as for our table. Sigh, those days are gone as well. I cannot, and know of none with skills enough, nor desire to do such a thing. One of the saddest parts of growing old without the use of legs, along with being grounded and ashore!
Thank you for your kind sensible explanation...

I did hear years ago that the NZ venison industry tried breaking into the US market, not sure whether it was supermarket or restaurant but the effort went flat. I heard that when people found that venison came from Bambi that it was a big turn off. So blame walt Disney. There's nothing like eating meat or fish you have gathered yourself, or eating vegetables and fruit you have grown. No pesticides, no antibiotics and no growth hormones.
