Had to make a trip to Portland VA hospital today. On the way back to Castle Rock, trapped in traffic blocked by I-5 major landslide at Woodland, Washington. No idea when it will be opened. Delayed several hours already.
Traffic reportedly blocked both north and south, with no real way to detour.

Oregon hwy 30 also blocked by landslides. Vernonia cut off by flood waters. 101 impssible. Might have to try to sleep in the car tonight! At least it isn't freezing cold and we weren't actually caught in the landslide.

It does not appear this ten mile traffic jam will ease anytime soon. The landslide apparently cannot be moved until more studies are done. Roads are blocked, freeway closed. One big pool of carbon monoxide! (we use diesel)
Total vehicular anarchy seems to be on the horizon!
Many freight liners have just parked on the side of the freeway.
We had some warning, however no other options. Pictures of the slide beginning to show on line. If you see the long line of vehicles, we are right in the middle.

Have just heard over the radio that I-5 will be closed until sometime Thursday! Oh joy! We are saved from possible destruction by WSDOT. Pictures of the slide appear to be only partially blocking the freeway. The workmen will not proceed until the engineers assure them of their safety! (Remembering numerous rescues where we (the USCG) had no assurance of our safety. We used to say "We go out because it is our job and we must, we return for ourselves!"

I think I understand what you are going through Dennis. We are never fully prepared for these occasions.it very often make one feel like when you are already down, you are kicked further down. My wife and I had a similar experience a few years ago here in the Uk, my son was taking us somewhere an we ran into an almighty traffic blockage / back up cause by a nasty accident; we were there for what seems to have been ages with no toilet facilities on that stretch of the highway, most uncomfortable for Eeveryone especially those families with small children in their cars. We survived it and have put it down to another experience along life's way. It would be interesting to know what caused the land slide, was it due to weather conditions? We here in parts of the UK are having some strange weather over here , storms and plenty rain an flooding, homes are being evacuated. Probably has something to do with global warming. Anyway, I hope that your ordeal ends soon Dennis, and I hope that all turns out well for you and yours. Partaker.

G'day. At midnight we finally got off the freeway, found some food and a B&B. Fortunately, being prepared I had medication along. We just got eight hours of sleep, and ready to face another day.
We only know status of highway still blocked.
Yes, partaker, weather here too caused the collapse and slide of soil and rock, some the size of vehicles. Seems a jurisdiction fight between Interstate and State is part of the problem solving the crisis. Whatever that, heavy heavy rains set records in the area for downfall. That's the news from here for anyone interested.

It's raining cats-and-dogs as I write this. The governor of Washington State has declared an emergency situation here. I hear that things are also bad in Oregon. I'm dreaming of a wet Christmas ho ho ho ho!

This is almost growing humorous! At 1500 hrs today, a policeman and WS DOT Employee, told us that I-5 would not be open until tomorrow sometime, but that Oregon Hwy 30 was open. Now we have waited 5 hours on Hwy 30.
A pleasant thing happened to us at the B&B where we finally stayed last night. The owner who believes a great deal the same as we, offered us a comp. return to stay another time, so we asked if Katie's birthday in Jan was available. It was, so that is on our calendar now.
We will have been stuck in traffic for over 19 hours just to try to get 70 miles home! At least we have a home, and eventually roads will be repaired. AND nobody is trying to kill us! Best practice is to count one's blessings!
Storms!

Ah! We must always give thanks to God even for small mercies. Looks like there will be a silver lining at the end of a dark cloud, after all. Blessings to you and yours.

That's good advice, Wally.
Now we are back in Washington, highway is clear, and only 15 miles from home, at long last. Thanks to those of you offering encouragement. Imagine, 34 hours to travel such a short distance...
