It's quite a surprise that I'm writing this verse," 'Cause I should have by now, had a ride in a hearse, But believe it or not, I am still above ground Not knowing how long I'll be hanging around.
I start each day with a hit of caffeine To help me pretend that I'm still what I've been, But I now take all day to do half a days work And by then I have found out, where the pains lurk!
I once thought "retiring" was something to seek, But sometimes I long for the old 5 day week, Each day's now the same -the weekends have gone, And the only "weekends"are the legs I stand on!
I'm as busy as ever with things in the shed, Mainly sorting junk -most of which is now "dead" But I'm a good bloke -I've gathered a lot And you'd be surprised, at what I've still got.
So apart from the grizzles and groans that age brings I'm keeping amused reminiscing on things And I treat every day as it comes and it goes But how long can this last, nobody knows.

It is,
My eyes are crook, I cannot see, Old man's complaint, won't let me pee, It's hard to eat, I cannot chew, Surprise, surprise, It's impossible to screw.

But you are at least seven years younger than me!
You are just a spring chicken yet!

We start our sometimes tedious, sometimes exciting, often times sad and stressful march to the grave the moment we're born, so it might as well be a march worth remembering.” ― Donna Lynn Hope

Today being Father's day, I think of my dear Dad, my best mate. I remember when I was a young boy, Dad used to sing this song.
Let Us Grow Old Together
Dearest little boy, I’d like to tell you Now that we’re contented let us try Doing things to make each other happy Let us sit and plan a lulla bye ————— Chorus Let us grow old together We should worry about the weather you and I Let us grow old together Just as long as we are contented let us try ————— We will live day by day Planning dreams that should come true In a palace just beyond There’s a room for just we two Let us grow old together We will weather life together you and I —————— Day by day we grow a little older Day by day we’ve learned a little more Let us be the same to one another Just as we’ve been in days of yore

Also remember my Brother who died in 2007. He was 4 years older, and always into mischief. As a result received the strap from Mother, and sent to the bedroom.
When the sobbing stopped, between tears he would sing,
No one cares for me, no one cares for me, Not a friend in all the world have I, None to sooth away my fears, None to dry away my tears, All alone with sorrow, I must die.
It was always sung with great feeling, with great sobs between each line. The climax was always at the end, when there was a great crash on the floor, as he died.
It must have ripped Mother's heart out, as she would go to the bedroom and allow him to come out. I guess she felt like crying as well.

Sorry BB, the strings are broken. Strings can be replaced. Pegs can be tightened. Sounding post adjusted....Sometimes the violin needs a little work or upkeep and yearly check-up by a string wizard. It needs to be 're-set', so to speak. And then, it needs to be played. The more it is played, the better it sounds... There are many "attic fiddles" out there; left alone... An interesting, heart-warming story. www.berkshireeagle.com/columnists/ci_27717271/joseph-w-ryan-ryan-family-fiddle-goes-from

As each person gets older/ages, we've got to make peace with it, or we might end up feeling a constant sense of grief over what we "lose" as we age. Yes, there are things we lose. But there are also things we gain. Many of us lose a degree of the carefree feeling we had-not as many worries/cares perhaps? And with that we tend to replace it with other worries and cares. But there are some things we cared greatly about when we were young that really turned out to be burdens and as we got older we were able to drop those burdens. So it's funny how that works. I guess I am saying that throughout life we do have worries and cares, they just tend to change. The things I used to worry about in my 20's are different than the things I worry about today. I haven't decided which set of worries is worse. It's nice not to be burdened down with too much worry, regardless of how old you are. There will always be worries and stressors throughout life. The challenge for me is to not let the cares of life overtake the joy. The vigor we felt as a younger person is perhaps gone? We don't spring back physically as well as we did. Energy seems to be more evasive while at the same time sleep can be more challenging as we tend to produce less melatonin. But we DO have an advantage which comes with hindsight being 20-20-based on our experience. We've been through a lot. We know what 'worked' in the past and what didn't 'work'. Therefore we tend to waste less time on what didn't 'work'.

Worrying doesn't take away your troubles; it takes away your peace.

No matter how old we are there is an open door....somewhere. This song explores it, expresses. Darrell Scott, again. Sorry folks. I'm on a Darrell Scott kick tonight. I've seen him live with Tim O'Brien. (great duet, BTW) and took a songwriting workshop from him. He is a phenomenal artist. He's written all these songs, many recorded by big stars. But he himself seems to keep a lower profile, though he is this mega talent. www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1iQGiPfgas&index=27&list=RD8jL3fycVjfk

www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1iQGiPfgas&index=27&list=RD8jL3fycVjfkThe Open Door
Well, it's "fare thee well", my true love The song is in the air I hear the West calling See what's for me there
With the sun I'm leavin' I'll be Montana bound Ain't no use in grievin' I'll show you what I've found
Yeah, some folks have it easy At least that's how it seems Reach up and pick an apple Reach up and find a dream
Some travel in the darkness And rest upon the shade Some wrestle with their demons And face them unafraid
We argue for our better selves We only ask for more We take the mirror from the shelf And find the open door
I love you with a fever I love you with a past My heart is a keeper As long as it will last
As long as it will last I'll tell you what I know We walk this road together And we walk this road alone

I get a kick out of these lyrics. By Darrell Scott. Still Got A Ways To Go. time is slowly ticking, taking all our youth beelzebub and chosen one have both been in cahoots they play us like gin rummy and they’re cheating on the side while we gaze into a broken mirror like frankenstein’s bride i wish someone could tell me something i don’t already know it’s been some hard living, still got a ways to go
rooster in the hen house hit man on the phone low man on the totem pole can’t get no time alone i’ve been seeking satisfaction for this gnawing in my soul i'd build a house like andrew jackson if that were my only goal i’m looking for a change to come but, brother, change comes slow and it’s been some hard living, still got a ways to go, ho ho ho
i look outside at this beautiful day sun is shining lighting up my way i gotta get out of here and get me a fishing pole it’s been some hard living and i still got a ways to go
i pontificate, i suffocate, i overate (my my) i’ve been wearily, sincerely, too lonesome now to cry gawking, squawking, talking from a patent leather couch working through my childish hood beyond the shadows and the doubts oh ye of little consequence please cast that first precious stone cause it’s been some hard, hard living and i still got a ways to go
i look outside and it’s starting to rain ‘round the curve comes a passenger train northbound freight on a south bound track yea, she’s alright leaving but she wont be coming back
i look outside at this beautiful day sun is shining man its lighting up my way i gotta get out of here and get me a fishing pole it’s been some hard living and i still got a ways to go (yodel) ...still got a ways to go

This verse came to mind, reading this thread today:
Sing to me sweet songs of Zion, when I see life's evening star, And my barque is slowly drifting out across time's lonely bar. If perchance, I may be fearing, sweet will sound some blest refrain. Sing to me the songs of Zion. Let me hear them once again.
