"Long Stretch Of Lonesome"
Never mind the struggle Never mind these tears I cry Through it all I will stay humble As I keep a watchful eye For that sweeter change of fortune That's closer now than it's been Where the memories that haunt me Are gonna someday be my friend When that long stretch of lonesome comes to an end
On some crazy river But I still have control And I will not surrender I'll stay true to heart and soul There's a sea of love awaiting Down at the river's end There I'll drown my sorrows And there I'll live again When that long stretch of lonesome comes to an end
When that long stretch of lonesome finally comes to an end My heart belonging to someone It'll never be longing again And the shadows that have dogged me since I can't remember when Finally give quarter To the sunlight on my skin When that long stretch of lonesome comes to an end
And the shadows that have dogged me since I can't remember when Finally give quarter to the sunlight on my skin
When that long stretch of lonesome When that long stretch of lonesome When that long stretch of lonesome comes to an end
Written By-Gary Scruggs and Tony Arata

My reasons for both loving and relating to this song are multiple. It was made familiar to me by the Patty Loveless CD "Long Stretch of Lonesome" in which the title cut song is amazingly sung/performed with such passion. Well, almost no one can belt out these feelings like Kentucky native, Patty. Her husband is also her producer and plays bass on all the songs, too. Co-written by a Scruggs, you almost cannot go wrong with this combo. She has recorded other songs written by a Scruggs. (Randy, I think.), who is an amazing musician/producer in his own right and son of the famous Earl Scruggs (banjo wizard). Anyways, the above is not the main reason I love the song. I relate to the message. It's not telling us life is going to be easy or perfect, but letting us know that there is HOPE in sight, even when we cannot 'see the light'. Life CAN sometimes feel dark. And, that darkness can affect our vision as we may feel we just cannot see.... Life can sometimes make us feel like we are on some crazy river trip, but it flows into a marvelous SEA. Memories that perhaps once bothered us or haunted us and will not go away can someday perhaps be a friend...I like that thought. The moon shines at night, but it has both a light and a dark side...something to think about. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrBDBYNUj_Y

"Where I'm Bound" Can you hear it cross the valley Can you hear that mournful sound I'm riding rails of silver Going to where I'm bound High above the fields of clover On a lazy, hot July When I get to where I'm going I'll hold my head up high I will roll across these mountains I will take the last train out Riding rails of silver Going to where I'm bound Roses, dust and ashes Throw them where I lay And if by chance you see me There'll be no sorrow on my face For I will see the beauty I only wish that you could see I'll leave my body weakened I'll leave my soul to wander free, so free So if you should see a diamond Fall down from the sky Its just a teardrop From the corner of my eye As good-bye, as I fly To where I'm bound www.youtube.com/watch?v=j485mHC7w7o
