This Bible study has been taken from chapter 8 of LIVE BEFORE YOU DIE Interesting... a Bible study but not from the Bible.
It seems the title (theme?) of the book might contradict what the Bible really says?
John 12:24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Rom. 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

I like your comments .In particular John 12:24 but reading it in context gives you some insight that perhaps Jesus was talking about himself?
Jhn 12:18
For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
Jhn 12:19
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
Jhn 12:20
¶
And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
Jhn 12:21
The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
Jhn 12:22
Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Jhn 12:23
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Jhn 12:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Jhn 12:25
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
So we could apply that to Jesus or ourselves. Living for Jesus requires us to die to self.
In regards to
my words that it was a Bible study. There are many helpful guides to studing the bible without being the bible. Perhaps you might think of a concordance as one such help
In regards to you Romans quote I also aprreciated the preceding verses which illuminate your particular verse:
Rom 8:8
So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:10
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Rom 8:12
¶
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Rom 8:13
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
