What I am saying is that pedophilia is a defined illness and the descriptions of the transgressions that have been posted here do not indicate that any of the people were pedophiles. Sharon, you have labeled people as having a psychiatric disorder when the facts do not support your claim. It is pure speculation on your part and potentially damaging to the people you have so labeled. I have not seen in any of the court documents that they were considered to be pedophiles. Someone can have sexual relations with a minor but that does not mean they are a pedophile. Rational, not arguing here, but asking for educative purposes. Can you provide us the definition for pedophilia. With references if possible. You mention pedophilia as being a "defined illness". Do you see some form of medical treatment rather than (or as well as) conviction and incarceration as being appropriate? Take your time, I would appreciate learning about this.

Rational, not arguing here, but asking for educative purposes. Can you provide us the definition for pedophilia. With references if possible. I did a quick check in my trusty Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and then followed it up with their reference guides. It would have been quicker to just go to Wikipedia. After reading the main article I would suggest it for anyone who would like to know more rather than me typing much the same information. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PedophiliaOf interest to this discussion is section 7.1. I do not believe there has been a definitive treatment but there have been some cases with limited success. This is one of the problems when a non-pedophile is labeled as a pedophile. It is assumed that a pedophile will never be 'cured' while the success rate for other sexual criminals is actually a little better than for the criminal population in general. Not a lot of time especially since Wikipedia has a well written section that certainly follows the current guidelines. It also raises several other issues regarding the problems that arise when the term is not used as defined.

Just out of curiosity, I knew a man personally, he was 19 years old, and had sexual relations with a seventeen year old. Her father had him arrested, and he got one year in prison for statutory rape, actually county jail (anything less than a year is county time in California).
My question is: Is he a pedophile? Was he a rapist? And did he deserve a year in jail?
(Note: Although you would not have known this at the time of his trial, as it had not yet come to pass, so do not base your answer on this, but the couple in question are married now)
