I recall AA being in our meeting in Fl in early 70's. We had chairs in a circle and he sat in the middle. He spoke about mending it, not ending it. My impression was that he was revered above all people, including other workers, not really human. Just my feeling at the time. I felt his talk was made with love. I remember him in late 70's staying in a house at convention. I believe he was too sick to be out. It was a big deal that he was in that house. That was in NH. An ex, Jen

I will never forgot him. I had a eight month old baby that got stung by a bee in the meeting tent during meeting at Sharon convention. She let out a screaming cry and I couldn't get out of the tent fast enough for Andrew. He told me to get that screaming baby out and don't bring her back. Needless to say, we took her home and haven't been back since. No one offered to help me out and get me some medicine for her. At that time I sure wished I could have flown out of there.

On a sweet note, Andrew and Martine Weller were very affectionate and nearly close to marrying. However, both decided to devote themselves to the "work" and went their separate ways, maintaining nevertheless great respect and affection for each other. This sacrifice was held up to us "young ones" as the greatest sacrifice of all, and I will never forget it. A sort of bittersweet, ala Romeo and Juliet relationship.

Interesting. I heard AA was overseer while in very poor health towards the end. He had a stroke and could hardly speak afterwards. Quite a knock down for someone noted for his charismatic preaching style. He thought I was a hippy. I thought that was hilarious. Once he criticized some of my relatives in a convention meeting and they got up and left and never came to meeting again. It wasn't like he knew them -- he was visiting from the US for convention and as usual asked about the local problems and addressed them explicitly at convention. One time he was rebuked for trying to chastise the locals when he was there visiting. But I guess workers get a lot of that.

I have a request for the date AA died. Anyone have his funeral notes? Thanx, CK Andrew's date of death was October 11, 1988. He was born in Philadelphia, PA Jan. 13, 1903. He died in the home of Charles and Mamie Graves in Milford Delaware. Two brother workers were with him the time of death. I believe Tom Nussbaum was one of them. The service was held at the Milford Convention grounds and burial was in the Perley Chappell burial plot in Milford. The notes I have are short and only one page long. Sherman Farrar was also buried At Milford on March 13, 1989 in a plot not far from Andrew.

George Walker funeral notes 1981-
Andrew Abernathy spoke of George coming to Philadelphia, 78 years ago this month, and having his first mission near Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. He said the gospel he and his companion preached promised liberty and independence form the bondage of sin, false religion and wrong doctrine

I had to wait for AA to come to McCordsville Convention to give his blessing before I was allowed to file for divorce. My ex had deserted me and our two year old son in April and I was completely bound financially---was paying for two cars and couldn't sell either, nor execute other financial transactions because everything was in joint. Duane Hopkins waited until Sept to ask AA and then the two of them informed by inlaws and then they told me it was okay. Why the hell were we so stupid? ?

I wonder how many of those original workers were of the same cloth? I think WI was for sure or he may have had other psychological issues as well......when you get several of the narcisstic together sometimes it can either be they follow after one another or they become very antagonistic toward each other.

WI was a classic narcissist. I don't know about most of the others of the original workers, but I know a few of them that certainly were not. There's no test for narcissism in people who are offering for the work, so if someone is inclined to be a "personality" they can easily pass the test. The funny/sad thing about narcissistic workers is that the overseers not's normally seem to care about that at all, the sooner one displays his narcissism after going in the work the better his chances at "promotion".

How long was he ill? I heard he kept the overseer position when his health was gone. He did keep it, though he pretty well prepared those who would follow after him. I guess his stroke was his "writing on the wall". I heard him at convention in Milford once after his stroke, and he said that since his stroke he had learned to be more humble. I just thought, "How much more humble?"
